What is balayage and why do we love it?

The balayage colouring technique isn’t new. It was developed in France in the 70s and means to sweep or to paint.

Celebrities such as Gisele Bundchen, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Aniston have been making the most of the method for years.   As it almost completely saturates the land of celebrity, and training in the technique filters throughout UK hairdressers, it has become one of the top in-salon requests.

Think of balayage as freestyle for colourists.  It is the process of hand-painting sections of hair for a natural and sun-kissed look.  Our hair is naturally darker at the roots and lighter at the ends and balayage considers this when sections of colour are carefully placed throughout the hair.

IT’S SUITABLE FOR ALL HAIR COLOURS AND TONES

Any hair colour can make the most of the technique – it’s not just for blondes!  Amazing balayage can be created on light, dark, grey and even multi-coloured hair.  It can be designed using any tone to suite your colouring and the colours you wear.  Jack Howard, celebrity balayage expert, pointed out that if you enjoy wearing silver jewellery you might like to investigate cooler tones and if you wear a lot of gold, consider warm.   This is a simple and effective way to start to define the tones you might enjoy in your hair and the overall look you want to achieve

IT’S LOW MAINTENANCE

Because the colour doesn’t go right to the roots of the hair it means you don’t have to have your hair coloured as often.  Particularly if you are a brunette because in general, the colour placement will start lower down the hair.  Clients can expect to visit the salon for a refresh every 12-16 weeks.

IT’S BESPOKE

The balayage colouring technique gives a wonderful, natural effect reminiscent of the hair we were all so lucky to have when we were little.  The best hairdressers work with the natural colours, tones, and textures of hair rather than against them and this is exactly what balayage allows us to do.
