NAME: KERRY WILSON
JOB TITLE: SALON MANAGER
HOW DID YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
When I left school, I worked as a junior at a solicitors supporting the office with general administration. I then worked for seven years at an oil and gas company before taking a role as an administrator on a dive vessel offshore dealing with crew changes and logistics. Before I started working at the salon I was working in the Sainsbury’s next door when I got talking to Rebecca. I really do feel the stars aligned for me that day and now I know it’s true that everything has a way of working out.
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB ENTAIL AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PART?
Day-to-day I am the face of Rebecca Carr Hair Salon, greeting clients and taking bookings and making sure the salon is running smoothly. I am also assistant to Rebecca and her right-hand woman helping with anything she needs. My favourite part of the job is meeting so many people and welcoming different faces into the salon. I love that I’m getting to know our clients and building relationships with them now too. I describe myself as an introverted extrovert – I love meeting and interacting to people when I’m at work and when I get home enjoy my own company and a little Prosecco.
WHAT IS YOUR OWN HAIR TYPE AND HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE IT LOOKS GREAT?
I have very short hair now. We had an education director up doing some training, he used me as a model and I was convinced to go for the plunge. At first I panicked as I didn’t know if I could style it myself but I quickly realised it’s so easy and low-maintenance. It’s also a bit quirky and different and so I often receive compliments on the style. I’ve been almost every colour imaginable but right now have settled on a warm brown.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT A FAVOURITE COLOUR/STYLE/TRANSFORMATION YOU HAVE SEEN?
I have seen so many great hair changes in the salon. I love to see bravery and people just going for it. We’ve had a few clients with very long hair who have decided to chop the lot and donate it to the Little Princess Trust which supplied wigs to children who have lost their hair through illness.
WHO IS YOUR HAIR ICON?
I love Paloma Faith because she always changes it up. I also like Emile Sande’s short style and bold colour. I’m a fan of red hair and like to see people embrace theirs, such as Mary Portas, who always looks so individual.
WHAT IS THE ONE HAIR PRODUCT YOU WOULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT?
Label M Volume Mousse which is a styling mousse but in a spray form. I’m not a huge product person because I like my hair to feel natural and untreated, so this product works for me because it is so lightweight. It’s the most popular product on the salon floor.
WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION?
I get my inspiration from the team and watching them do what they do best. I’ve learned so much in the last year and the stylists are always showing me different things.
HOW WOULD YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS DESCRIBE YOU?
I think they would describe me as content now as I’ve truly found a job I love. For a long time, they might have said I could be stressed and agitated but I get a real buzz from working at the salon. I’m also a very family and friends orientated person.
WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
I’ve got two chocolate Labradors so if I’m not working I am walking my dogs. I walk them three times a day and according to my Fitbit I average between 13,000 and 20,000 steps every day.
WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON YOU HAVE LEARNED?
Not to overthink things.
